Impacts assessment in marine areas: a multi- disciplinary approach supporting adaptive management of the Adriatic Sea

Europe’s seas are facing increasing threats and degradation due to a range of human activities, impairing marine ecosystems and their services for human wellbeing.
Climate change is likely to further exacerbate the stress experienced by marine systems, triggering alteration on biological, chemical and physical processes and interfering with human activities and the economic uses of the sea. Improving our capacity to model and evaluate the combined effects of multiple stressors, in decisional contexts characterized by high uncertainty linked to natural dynamics difficult to predict, is therefore essential to address a sustainable marine planning and to boost inter sectorial management strategies.

On January 29, 2019, CMCC researcher Elisa Furlan (RAAS Division) presented a multi-risk approach, integrating different metrics and scenarios of climate, ocean, bio-geochemical and anthropogenic pressures in an interactive impacts perspective, during the CMCC webinar “Cumulative impacts assessment in marine areas: a multi- disciplinary approach supporting adaptive management of the Adriatic Sea”.
The methodology was developed and in particular tested in the Adriatic Sea case study.

The author provided an overview of the methodological approach, as well as the key findings of its application at the case study level, focusing on their potential to support multi-risk scenarios evaluation and to drive sustainable and adaptive maritime spatial planning and management.
